The Dade County High School wrestling teams competed at Area Duals this past week.

The Lady Wolverines competed in their first ever duals as a team. Lahna Hartline, Baylee Perkins, Maleah Wilson, Aly Frasier, Emma Hartline, Mylee Chambers, and Jerzee Crabtree made history as the first official girls wrestling team in Dade County.

The Lady Wolverines only filled seven weight classes, which is the minimum to compete, and forced their second dual to a criteria decision. Dade faced off against Ridgeland in the first dual and lost 42-24. In their second match up, the Lady Wolverines faced Pepperell, and the Lady Dragons won 37-36 on criteria.

“I am hoping the girls team continues to grow. I am extremely proud of the progress these ladies have made. I will not be surprised to see a couple of them make it to Macon,” coach Jeff Poston said.

The boys finished third in the 7-1A Area Duals Championships and missed a trip to State Duals for the first time since 2018. Dade lost 42-32 to Gordon Lee in the semifinals and beat Model 66-18 in the consolation finals.

The Wolverines were hoping Gordon Lee would upset Trion in the finals, and they would get a chance to wrestle for true second. The Bulldogs would hold onto the top spot however, and Dade was forced to stay home and begin working toward the Traditional championship.

“We were close, but we did not have enough bullets to seal the deal. We have some really tough young kids on this team, and I am excited to see how they perform in the Traditionals,” coach Jeff Poston said.

Girls Traditional are Jan. 31 at LaFayette, and the Boys Traditional Area is Feb. 1 at Coosa High School.
