Wolverines Fall By Three To Gordon Lee In Region Opener

The Wolverines fell to the Trojans in the first region game of the year. They will be at home on Friday when they host Christian Heritage in another region game.

The Dade County Wolverine basketball team traveled to Gordon Lee on Tuesday, Dec. 3, to face the Trojans in the first region game of the season.

Gordon Lee came out hot and put 23 points on the Wolverines in the first quarter as they struggled to score 11 and found themselves trailing by 12 points early.

The Trojans cooled off in the second quarter, but Dade County still struggled to score and at the end of the first half they were down by 14 points, 35-21.

In the third quarter the Wolverines shot the ball much better, and the defense stepped up, holding the Trojans to just seven third quarter points while they scored 16 and cut the host’s lead to just five points, 42-37.

Early in the fourth quarter Dade took the lead but could not finish as Gordon Lee rallied and pulled out the win, 55-52.

Jace Anderson and Braydan Jones scored 10 points each and grabbed seven rebounds each while H. Garmany also scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Wolverine coach James Emmett said, “We were down by 14 at the half, fought back and actually led by six points in the second half. We have to learn how to finish a game late when we have the lead.”

On Saturday afternoon the Wolverines traveled to North Sand Mountain to face Fyffe in the Herd Classic.

The two teams got off to a good start and the game was back and forth early with Fyffe taking the lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-12.

The teams both improved their scoring in the second quarter as they swapped baskets with both teams scoring 17 second quarter points. At the end of the first half Fyffe maintained their three-point lead, 32-29.

With both teams shooting the ball well in the third quarter Fyffe was able to increase their lead by four points after putting up 24 third quarter points to lead 56-49.

Fyffe would dominate the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 18-14 and coming away with a 74-61 win.

Jones led the Wolverines with 20 points and six rebounds, while Shrader scored 18, Anderson and Shrader had five rebounds each.

Coach James Emmett said, “Turnovers were the biggest issue in this game. We had more than 20 turnovers. We must start valuing the ball more and taking better care of it moving forward. Too many possessions taken away from us tonight because of those turnovers.”

The Wolverines traveled to Coahulla Creek on Tuesday and then will play at home Friday, Dec. 13, when they host Christian Heritage in a region game.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Wolverines will host the Dade JV Classic with games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Get out and support Wolverine varsity and JV teams.
