Wolverines Come Up Short In 31–28 Lose To Trion Bulldogs

The Dade County High School Wolverine football team hosted the Trion Bulldogs on Friday in a non-region contest. The Bulldogs dropped down a classification this year and are competing this year in class A D2 Region 7 while the Wolverines remain in class A D1 Region 7.

The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff, and the Wolverine defense held and forced a punt that was downed at the Wolverine eight-yard line.

Dade County went to work and scored the game’s first points after a 92-yard drive when Evan Koger scored on a short run putting the Wolverines on top. The extra point was good, and the Wolverines led 7-0.

Trion answered on their next drive when they scored on a pass play with 4:57 remaining in the first quarter and with the extra point tied the game 7-7. The first quarter ended with the scored tied.Early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored again on a field goal to take the lead 10-7 with 11:14 remaining in the first half.

Trion missed a field goal with 3:46 left in the first half and Dade answered with an 80-yard Koger touchdown run with 3:30 remaining in the first half. The extra point was blocked, and the Wolverines led 13-10.

The Bulldogs quickly answered with a touchdown of their own and with 2:05 remaining in the first half led 17-13.

Trion got the ball back with just over a minute left in the first half and quickly scored again to take the lead at halftime, 24-13.

At 8:36 in the third quarter, the Bulldogs kicked another field goal but a roughing the kicker penalty on the Wolverines game them a first down at the six-yard line. On the next play, Trion scored a touchdown to build their lead to 31-13 with 8:33 remaining in the third quarter.

From that point on, it was all Dade County! With three minutes left in the third quarter, H. Garmany scored, and a two-point conversion cut the Bulldogs lead to 31-21.

With 7:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, Dade put together another drive and Carter Christiansen scored on a 36-yard run and a two-point conversion cut Trion’s lead to 31-28.

The Wolverine defense rose to the occasion and forced a Bulldog punt and with 1:57 remaining in the game, were in business at their own 32-yard line. Dade’s hopes of a big come-from-behind victory were quickly wiped out when Trion intercepted a Wolverine pass on the first play of the drive.

The Bulldogs held on and defeated the Wolverines 31-28 in a hard-fought game.

Koger led Dade County’s offense with 18 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Garmany had ten carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.

The Wolverines totaled 349 yards total offense to the Bulldogs 334.

On defense, the Wolverines were led Jace Anderson with 14 tackles, Christiansen with 13 tackles, Evan Avans with five tackles, two assists, one sack, and two pass breakups, and Gabriel Yarbrough with five tackles.

This week, the Wolverines travel to LaFayette to face the Ramblers in the final non-region game of the season. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
