Dade Remaining In 7–A Division 1

The Georgia High School Athletic Association reclassifies all Georgia high schools every two years to determine which region the athletic teams will be competing in. The determination is made based on the enrollment of the school. Schools have a multiplier for out of district students to level the playing field for private schools and city schools that have more out of district students.

Dade County has been in region 7-A Division 1 for the past two years and will remain there for the coming two years, but the region will be losing some members and gaining others.

Gone will be old nemesis Darlington, Pepperell, and Trion (Trion will remain on the football schedule as a non-region foe). New region 7-A D-1 members Fannin County, Gordon Central, and Gordon Lee will replace them.

Darlington and Pepperell will remain in single A but will be in region 6-A D-1 while Gordon Lee is returning to Class A after participating in class AAA for the past two years. They opted to move to AAA due to the travel required by playing in region A D-2.

Carry over teams from the past two years include Armuchee, Chattooga, Christian Heritage, Coosa, and Dalton Academy (they do not participate in football).

Travel time for the Wolverines will not change a lot since two trips to Rome will be exchanged for a trip to Calhoun and Blue Ridge.

It seems like just yesterday that school let out for the summer but now teams have already or will soon be starting practice for fall sports.

The Lady Wolverine softball team has a scrimmage game this week, and football will be in full swing in a few days. Soccer will also be on the practice field.

The softball team plays its first game on Aug. 1 when LaFayette comes to DCHS.

The football team will play a scrimmage at Marion County on Aug. 9 and then will have a pair of home games to start the season on Aug. 16 against Ringgold and Aug. 23 against Trion.

Soccer will also be starting around the same time, but we don’t have a schedule yet for them.Fall sports action is just around the corner, and playoff hopes are high for the Wolverine teams.

With the new region alignments, some new rivalries will begin while some old ones will continue, and some may be rekindled in the playoffs. Either way, an exciting Wolverine sports season will be getting underway soon.
