The Dade County Wolverine basketball team hosted the Pepperell Dragons on Monday, Feb. 5, in the final game of the regular season as they get ready for the region tournament.

The Wolverines came out and took the early lead and at the end of the first quarter were up 12-9.

That lead did not last long as the visiting Dragons took the lead early in the second quarter and at the end of the first half were up 23-18.

Both teams played well in the third quarter, especially shooting the ball, and heading into the fourth quarter Pepperell held on to the lead, 41-38. The Wolverines outscored them 20-18 in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as both teams turned it up a notch, each battling for the win.

In the end the Wolverines took the lead late and pulled out a big region win, 54-51.

The win left the region in a five-way tie for third place, and after the tiebreaker, the Wolverines would be the five seed for the region tournament.

Braydan Jones led Dade County with 14 points while Conner Wilburn scored 12 and Bryson Shrader scored 11 points.

The Wolverines traveled to Armuchee on Friday for the first game of the region 7A D1 tournament needing a win to advance to the state tournament.

The two teams got off to a slow start as their shots did not fall early and at the end of the first quarter the Dade County held a one-point lead, 10-9.

The action picked up in the second quarter as the two teams settled into the game and at the end of the first half the Wolverines held a narrow three-point lead, 26-23.

The third quarter saw the wheels fall off for Dade as the Indians shots were falling and the Wolverines shots were not. By the end of the third quarter Dade’s three point lead had turned into a seven point Armuchee lead, 44-37.

The Wolverines fought back, and with 1:31 remaining in the game, they tied the score, 56-56, but with 16 seconds remaining they found themselves down 60-58 and were unable to pull the win out and fell to the Indians 62-58.
