Congratulations to the Wolverine wrestlers on their top eight finish at state. The final home match of the year is Thursday against Ft. Payne and will be Senior Night. Get out and support the Wolverines!
The Dade County Wolverine wrestling team competed at the State Dual Championships at Heard County last Saturday, and finished in the Elite 8.
Dade County opened up the tournament with a 48-25 victory over Irwin County. The Wolverines would meet the eventual state champion Social Circle in the second round, and the Redskins cruised to a 58-18 victory over Dade.
The second day of competition started with a 60-18 victory for the Wolverines over Madison County Academy in the round of 12. The victory ensured the Wolverines of their fifth Top 8 finish in the past six seasons, (Last year’s team finished in the Sweet Sixteen).
Dade’s final match up came against Heard County, and the Indians proved to be just a little bit better than the Wolverines. Heard would win the dual by the score of 42-30.
Coach Jeff Poston said, “I felt like our youthfulness got us in that last dual. We had our opportunities to win it, but we did not quite grasp the moment when we needed to. Jet Shavers gave us everything he had in his match at 175 pounds, and he came up short in overtime, but he left it all on the mat. I feel like that kind of effort will serve this team well as we move on to the individual portion of the season.”
The Wolverines will host Fort Payne, Ala., for senior night on Thursday. It will be the final dual of the season as Traditional Area will take place Feb. 3 at Trion High School.
