The Dade County High School Lady Wolverines basketball team hosted Oakwood Christian Academy last week in their first home game of the season and came away with their first victory of the season.

Dade County got off to a slow start, scoring just eight first-quarter points while Oakwood was pouring in 12 points and took the first quarter lead, 12-8.

The Lady Wolverines picked up the pace in the second quarter on both offense and defense and held Oakwood to six points while scoring 11 of their own and took a one-point lead at the end of the first half, 19-18.

Dade County continued to play much better in the second half as they outscored the visitors 12 to eight in the third quarter and led 31-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Wolverines outscored Oakwood 13 to 12 and came away with a hard-fought victory, 44-38.

The Lady Wolverines have improved each game so far and still have work to do, but the improvement from the first game is amazing. They are struggling at the free throw line as they hit only seven of sixteen attempts in the game for 43.8 percent.

Brooklyn Konrad led Dade County with 15 points and seven rebounds and Brianna Marlowe scored 11 points, and Adilynn Gross scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

On Friday night, the Lady Wolverines traveled to Pepperell to face the Lady Dragons in the first Region 7 1A game of the season.

The Lady Dragons got off to a fast start and led the Lady Wolverines 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Dade County played hard and managed 15 points in the second quarter, but the Lady Dragons scored 20 to take the lead 38-27 at the half.

The Lady Wolverines came out in the second half determined and began to close the gap on the Lady Dragons, outscoring them 13 to seven in the third quarter to cut the lead to 45-40.

In the fourth quarter, Dade County continued to battle. Late in the game, they cut the lead to four points and had the ball out of bounds, but a turnover to Pepperell sealed their fate. They fell 57-50.

After a dismal performance against Oakwood, the Lady Wolverines improved tremendously at the free throw line hitting 81 percent in the game, making 17 of 21. The game had 43 free throw attempts.

Gross led the Lady Wolverines with 21 points, hitting 11 of 13 free throws, and grabbing nine rebounds. Kailyn Castleberry had her best game of the season scoring 12 points and hitting three three-point shots. Konrad finished the night with six points and 14 rebounds.

Lady Wolverines travel to Chattooga on Friday for another region game. The varsity game will begin at 6 p.m.
