The Dade County High School Wolverine baseball team opened a three-game series with the Trion Bulldogs on Tuesday, April 11, with a doubleheader at home.

The Wolverines got off to a good start as they retired the Bulldogs in the top of the first inning after a one out single and two fly ball outs.

In the bottom of the first, Mason Gatlin walked as did Caleb Massey and a ground out moved the runners to second and third. Then, with one out, Jax Guinn singled up the middle to score two runs and put Dade on top 2-0.

A scoreless second inning kept the DCHS on top heading into the third inning when Trion came to life – scoring four runs with two outs. The rally started with an error followed by a walk and another error scored two runs. Two more runs scored on a single, and another Dade error gave them a 4-2 lead in the third inning.

That would be all the scoring until the fifth inning when the Bulldogs pushed across three more runs to go up 7-2 and then had a big sixth inning where they scored seven runs to put the game away, 14-2.

The Wolverines were limited to four hits, one each by Guinn, Massey, River McBryar, and Parker Hill.
Gatlin took the loss, pitching five innings giving up seven runs on seven hits and striking out four.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bulldogs got off to a fast start, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning.

That would be all the scoring until the top of the fourth inning when Trion added to their lead with seven more runs to go up 12-0.

That would be all they needed as the Wolverines did not get a hit and managed just two base runners in the game, one on an error and the other on a walk.

Jake Harris took the loss pitching 3.2 innings, giving up seven earned runs while walking seven and striking out two.

On Thursday, the Wolverines traveled to Trion for the third and final game of the series and the Bulldogs took the early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0.

The game would remain that way until the top of the third when the Wolverines’ Harris singled with one out. With two outs, Gatlin drew a walk and Landon Williams followed with a single to score Harris. Gatlin then scored on a wild pitch and Williams scored on an error to give Dade the lead, 3-2.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, 3-3.

In the top of the sixth with one out, Eli Kimball doubled to left. Guinn reached on an error and Kimball scored to give Dade the lead 4-3.

Trion got two runners on in the bottom of the sixth with no outs but was unable to score, and a scoreless seventh inning gave the Wolverines a 4-3 win.

Guinn picked up the win pitching six innings, giving up five hits, three runs, and striking out six. McBryar got the save pitching the seventh inning allowing one hit and no runs.

Landon Williams had one hit and one RBI while Gatlin, Caleb Williams, Kimball, Guinn, and Braydan Jones all had hits.
