Wolverines Swat Hornets in Five; Fall to Ramblers

The Dade County High School Wolverine baseball team traveled to LaFayette on Monday, Feb. 27, to face the Ramblers.

Dade County got off to a good start when two of the first three batters walked with one then scoring on a Rambler error. After another walk River McBryar came up with a big hit to score two runs and give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

They played at home on Tuesday, will travel to Chattooga on Thursday and be back at home on Friday.

LaFayette went down in order in the first inning but came back in the second inning to score three runs on two hits to tie the game 3-3.

The Wolverines were retired in order in the top of the third inning, but the Ramblers had another big inning in the bottom of the third when they scored four runs on two hits and a pair of Dade errors to make it 7-3 after four innings.

The fifth inning was another three up three down for the Wolverines as they were unable to do anything against the LaFayette pitcher.

In the bottom of the fourth the Ramblers put the game away with eight runs on just two hits, three errors, three walks and two hit batters.

In the top of the fifth Dade was unable to score and the game ended with the Ramblers claiming a 15-3 win.

McBryar picked up the only hit for the Wolverines, a first inning single that scored two runs.

Mason Gatlin took the loss for the Wolverines with Jake Harris pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28 the Wolverines hosted the Ider Hornets.

The Hornets opened the game with two singles, but a fielder’s choice and a double play ended the threat without giving up a run.

In the bottom of the first Dade picked up three hits while scoring three runs, the big blow coming from Jax Guinn who doubled to score two and then scored on a single by Braydan Jones to put the Wolverines on top 3-0.

Neither team was able to score in the second inning, but the Hornets stranded two base runners.

Dade added another run in the third inning on a single by Eli Kimball and a double by Landon Williams to take a 4-0 lead.

Ider got on the board in the top of the fourth when they picked up one hit and then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-1.

The Wolverines quickly answered in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three runs on just two hits to extend their lead to 7-1.

In the top of the fifth the Hornets got a pair of runners on with two outs but were unable to push them across home plate.

In the bottom of the fifth Dade scored four runs on two hits to end the game on the run rule, winning 11-1.

Guinn picked up the win pitching five innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Guinn also had a pair of hits and two RBIs while Caleb Massey, Kimball, and Jones had two hits each.

This week the Wolverines began region play on Tuesday when they hosted the Chattooga Indians.

On March 9, the Wolverines will travel to Chattooga for the second game of the three-game series with game time at 5 p.m., followed by a junior varsity game.

On Friday, Dade will be back at home to face Chattooga for the final game of the series with that game starting at 5:30 p.m.
