Dade County High School’s wrestling team earned a post season berth for the fifth consecutive year Saturday by finishing as the Area 7 1A runner up. This is also the fifth consecutive year the Wolverines have been either area champs or area runner up.
The Wolverines entered the tournament as the two seed behind Trion. Dade started the day with a win over Darlington in round one. Dade would then face Chattooga in the semifinals before facing Trion in the finals.
Dade decided to rest their starters against Trion to save energy for the true second match they would ultimately have against Armuchee.
Coach Jeff Poston said, “We didn’t have enough to beat Trion, and we knew we would probably have a battle with Armuchee for second place. It was important to us to get that second spot, so we forfeited most of the matches against Trion to make sure we didn’t suffer an injury or gas out.”
The match with Armuchee was a battle to the end with Dade getting the win 43-42.
The Wolverines will travel to East Laurens in Duluth for the first two rounds of state next Saturday. Dade will take on Crawford County in round one. A win there would put the Wolverines in the Sweet Sixteen for the fifth consecutive year. A win in round two will put Dade in the Elite 8 for the fifth consecutive year.
