The Dade County wrestling team made a little history Saturday, in more than one way. The Wolverines won consecutive Traditional Area team championships, making them back-to-back winners of both the duals championship and the traditional championship.
DCHS also qualified all 14 wrestlers for the sectional tournament this week in Cartersville. That accomplishment is also a first in program history. The Wolverines had five area champions, five area runner–ups, three third place finishers, and a fourth-place finisher.
Hayden Langley finished third at 106 pounds; Gideon Moore placed second at 113 pounds; Jake Gatlin took second at 120 pounds; Garrett Dunn finished first at 126 pounds; Andy Breeden earned fourth at 132 pounds; Brandon Willerson finished third at 138 pounds; Heidi Raines took third at 145 pounds; Cayden Cooper finished first at 152 pounds; Zac Smith placed second at 160 pounds.; Jax Guinn finished second at 170 pounds.; Landon Williams took first at 182 pounds.; Cody Williams earned first at 195 pounds; Isaac Pangle finished second at 220 pounds, and Austin Sorrelle earned first at 285 pounds.
The Wolverines scored 263 points as a team to run away with the team title as Model was the closest team with 192 team points.
“I am extremely proud of this group of kids. If Jake was not hurt, we would have had six champions. We forfeited his finals match because we want to keep him as healthy as possible for the next two weeks. We need his points in Macon, so this next week will be crucial at sectionals. The top six in each weight class will advance to the final bracket of 12 in Macon, and we want to make a run at the team title there,” Coach Jeff Poston said.
The north AA sectional will be Saturday in Cartersville. Wrestling will begin around 9 a.m.
