Golfers Help Optimist Raise Scholarship Funds

The 33rd annual Optimist Golf Tournament was held at the Trenton Golf Course. Twenty-six teams faced off at 9 a.m., as golf carts pulled out in all directions to start the 18 hole course. After approximately two hours of sunshine and golfing fun, the sky opened up and rain covered the course, the golfers and their carts. Some of the golfers looked for higher ground and a few packed up their clubs and gave in to the rain. Others forged the flood waters and settled for nothing but 18 holes as the rain slowed to a drizzle.

Golfers were such good sports and optimism glowed like a light bulb. They ate hot dogs, chips, chili and dessert while they dripped wet from head to toe, waiting for a decline in the rain. They could be heard giggling among themselves about the speed of the greens and how they were playing.

The success of this tournament definitely depended on golfer participation, securing pre-tournament day hole sponsors, and Optimist member leadership and volunteerism. One hundred and four golfers were divided in three flights and the 2021 tournament generated the greatest revenue in the history of the tournament. For some, the course was new to them. To others, they have played the course a number of times and are tournament regulars.

Each golfer received a goodie bag and a door prize of donated items from restaurant gift certificates to golf balls. Donated items were also available in a silent auction.

Funds from this annual tournament are designated to support graduating seniors in need of financial support to attend college. The Trenton Dade Optimist Club is proud to award scholarships to deserving students in the Dade County Schools. The golfers, sponsors, and volunteers can be assured that their contributions will go a long way to provide for deserving students financial assistance in their freshman year of college.

To all, thank you for your role in this 2021 33rd annual golf tournament – a major community event benefiting youth in the Dade Community.
