Dade County schools start next week and with the start of school means the start of the fall sports season as well.
The Lady Wolverine softball team swings into action Thursday at 5:30 p.m., hosting the LaFayette Lady Ramblers. They will travel to Ridgeland High School on Saturday, Aug. 3 for a doubleheader with the Lady Panthers starting at noon and will be back at home on Tuesday, Aug. 5, when they host Southeast Whitfield at 5:30 p.m.
On Aug. 6, they host Murray County at 5:30 p.m., travel to LaFayette on Aug. 7, and then travel to Dalton on Aug. 9, for a pair of games in a tournament at Heritage Point Park. That will complete a string of eight games in nine days to start the season!
The Lady Wolverines will be looking to make a return trip to the Elite Eight this season after a very successful season last year.
They are returning five starters from last season, and coach Stephen Graham said, “We have two seniors and five juniors that are currently filling out most of the varsity roster. The other two positions will most likely be filled by underclassmen.
“We have a great problem this upcoming season. We not only have a talented group of starters, but we also have other players showing a lot of promise, and will be pushing for playing time as well,” Graham added.
Graham went on to say, “Our pitching staff will be led by Lexi Lawson with support from Kira Strickland and Kaleighly West. Defensively we have a strong group returning and new players filling in key spots as well.
“Madi Page, who is our returning short stop, looks to lead our infield along side Adilyn Gross, Camy Chambers, and Rylee Byram.”
Graham added, “Our outfield has looked really strong this summer. Riley Talley is our only returning starter from last year in the outfield, but Lilah Wilson, Winter Daniel, and Miley Chambers have worked hard this summer. Isabell White and Taylix Harvey make up our catching core with both showing a lot of good things this summer.
“Offensively, we have had a pretty solid showing this summer with the team scoring five or more runs in all of our scrimmage games except one.”
This looks to be an exciting season for the Lady Wolverines, and coach Graham added, “I am excited to see what this group can accomplish together. They set a goal to make it back to Columbus this year for the Elite Eight. I believe this group has the talent to make that happen as long as we keep a team first approach!”
Get out and support the Lady Wolverine softball team as they open the season at home on Thursday.
