At about 11:30 a.m. on July 7, 16-year-old Tucker Campbell was hit and killed by a train. The incident occurred underneath the GA-136 W bridge (between Oak Avenue and Sunset Drive).
Ansel Smith (Dade County deputy coroner) reported that, per the Norfolk Southern conductor, both the train and Campbell were traveling north, with Campbell walking on the tracks.
A nearby resident reported hearing the train slam on its brakes at the time of the tragedy.
Smith said that the investigators were awaiting video footage from the train for further confirmation about the incident’s details, but no foul play is suspected.
Campbell was a student at Dade County High School (DCHS).
In a Dade County Schools press release, DCHS principal Brent Cooper shared, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the loss of one of our Dade County High School students. Our entire school family is devastated by this heartbreaking event. We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
