John B. (Jack) Zibluk of Lookout Mountain formally announced the launch of his campaign for the 53rd District seat in the Georgia State Senate Saturday, June 28, at the Dade County Democratic picnic at Cloudland Canyon State Park.

“For too long, the residents of the district haven’t had a voice, or, moreover, a brain and a body either working for the people in Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Chattooga, and Floyd Counties,” Zibluk said, noting the incumbent Republican senator Colton Moore was this year arrested for violating his ban on appearing at the state house of representatives. “Our current senator is more interested in partisan division and grandstanding than working for the constituents,” Zibluk said.

Zibluk, 65, a professor and former department head of communication at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, ran for state representative last year after being urged to do so after he debated a conservative Republican scholar at UTC’s Constitution Day in 2023. “Rather than producing a circus, we found common ground,” Zibluk said, “And finding common ground in order to promote regional economic development, safe roads and access to health care are not partisan issues.”

“My last run was a great learning experience, and now I sort of have a clue about what I am doing,” he said. “And this time, I am not running alone.” To that end, he hired experienced Atlanta-based campaigner April Lakeman as a campaign manager to oversee “the nuts and bolts of fundraising and reaching out to voters.” Zibluk also received solid support from the Democratic committees in Dade and Walker Counties, with whom he has worked for the last two years.

A self-described “recovering journalist” and who calls himself “radically pragmatic” Zibluk said he would focus on practical issues, such as economic development, environmental and transportation safety, and access to healthcare, particularly mental healthcare. “These are not Republican or Democratic issues, and I am not by nature a political partisan. I just want to do a good job.” Zibluk said.
