At the end of February, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that four Georgia state senators have failed to report campaign contributions and expenses. Senator Colton Moore (53rd district) is the sole Republican under investigation alongside three Democrats.
The State Ethics Commission is also investigating Senator Derek Mallow (2nd district), Senator Freddie Powell (12th district), and Senator Kenya Wicks (34th district).
Per the AJC, the ethics commission has subpoenaed bank records from each senator.
Candidates and elected officials must report campaign contributions, expenses, and some personal and business finance details each year, as outlined in the Official Code of Georgia, sections 21-5-30 and 21-5-50.
The ethics commission audits the information after each election cycle, and one of these audits revealed that these four senators had not filed their information.
Moore told the Sentinel that his financial documents were not filed due to difficulty with the ethics commission login process. He said, “I have been fully transparent, and my wealth has not increased serving in the legislature.”
