Autumn time, and once again the harvest of ideas and products abound on Lookout Mountain. The New Salem community will welcome you Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15 to the 47th annual New Salem Mountain Festival.
Scheduled each year when fall dresses the native plants and trees with bold splashes of color, the festival is an outstanding outdoor seasonal event that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Exhibits are displayed along a unique woodland path.
Approximately 100 artists and craftsmen will be presented this year. Each participant is carefully screened to assure good quality. Exhibits will include paintings, pottery, woodturning, woodcarvings, furniture, iron works, quilts, jewelry, candles, leather, soap, home decor, children’s accessories, wreaths, woodwork, jellies, designed gourds and much more. Kids will enjoy the free petting zoo and tractor driven wagon rides.
The special exhibition indoors each year is the “Mountain Gallery.” It offers a unique collection of specially selected work from each exhibitor. For two days we will be a small museum where patrons can preview what’s to come and even be able to purchase these items. Local ladies will also be demonstrating the art of quilting.
There will be a good variety of delicious home-cooked food served by the New Salem Methodist Church, who is well known for their chicken stew and country pinto beans and cornbread. You will also find other goodies throughout the grounds including funnel cakes, caramel apples, nacho’s, cotton candy, pork skins, fudge, freeze dried candy, deep fried Oreo’s and pickles and boiled peanuts.
Entertainment will be provided throughout each day. Ample seating gives you the opportunity to relax while listening to a variety of music. Door prizes will also be given away throughout each day.
The festival strives to provide something for visitors of all ages, so bring the whole family for a day of enjoyment. Staffed by dedicated volunteers, all proceeds go to the New Salem Community Improvement Club, Inc., a non-profit organization sponsoring the event, and the New Salem Fire and Rescue. The festival committee and the New Salem Community Improvement Club would like to thank the Alliance For Dade for their generous help.
Festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday. The festival is held “rain or shine.” Admission is $8 for 12 years to adult, children 11 and under free. Parking is free.
