WANDA BARTON

Edna Wanda Barton, 85, of Trenton, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023.

She was born on June 24, 1937, in Henagar, Ala. Wanda was a homemaker and her family meant everything to her. She loved cooking for them and spending time with them. Wanda was a devoted member of Fairview Church of God and took pride in serving her church community. Among her hobbies and interests were working in the yard and being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Barton; parents, Jasper and Ethel O’Dell; sisters, Mary Lou O’Dell, Edith Johnson, Dorthy Wall, Inez Kunsman, and Earline Vandagriff; brother, Darrell O’Dell.

Survivors include her children, Gale (Ronnie) Hawkins, Drenda York, and Doug Barton; brother, Ronnie O’dell; grandchildren, Devonna (Jeremy) Taylor and Adam York; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., today, May 24, in the Trenton chapel of Moore Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Paynes Gap Cemetery in Flat Rock, Ala. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Taylor, Logan Taylor, Greyson Taylor, Jacob Barker, Coco Colbert, and Donnie Hawkins.

The family will receive friends today from 10 a.m., until the service hour.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to Roxanne, Mary, and the entire staff at Hearth Hospice for their compassionate care.

CHRIS GREENE

Christopher “Chris” Greene, 54, of Trenton, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023.

Chris was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., on March 24, 1969, to the late Larry and Joyce Greene and has resided in Dade County for most of his life. He was a 1987 graduate of Northwest Georgia High School. He attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and is a proud member of the Sigma-Chi Fraternity. He later attended and received his Masters degree in Biology from Jacksonville State University in Alabama. In the fall of 2022, Chris retired from the Dade County School System and had fulfilled many roles including: coaching, teaching biology and was dubbed as “The Scientist” by his nephew, Michael Greene. Chris also served as Director of Technology for the school system. He attended Trenton United Methodist Church and enjoyed hiking, exercising, traveling, cooking barbecue ribs and was known as a coffee connoisseur. He was a die-hard Alabama fan and loved traveling to Tuscaloosa to attend as many games as possible.

In addition to his parents, Chris is also preceded in death by his grandparents, Buck and Lesie Greene.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Jan Greene; brother, Chip (Kimberly) Greene; nieces and nephew, Michael Greene, Emily Greene, Heidi Hicks, and Ashley and Allison Thompson.

A celebration of life service was Saturday, May 20, at the Trenton chapel of Moore Funeral Home at with Bro. Alan Flowers officiating. Interment was at Hooker Cemetery in Wildwood.

PEEWEE PAYNE

Louis “Peewee” Eugene Payne, 88, of Rising Fawn, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023.

Peewee was born March 14, 1935, in Rising Fawn, to Conard and Edna Payne. Peewee was a hardworking man with a great sense of humor who always had a wise word to say and a warm welcome for everyone he met. He spent most of his career as the owner of Glass Farm Nursery and P&P Produce until his retirement. Peewee had many hobbies and interests including working around the farm, fishing, and helping others.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Payne; parents, Conard and Edna Payne; brothers, Freddie Payne, W.C. Payne, Gorden Lee Payne, Felix Payne, and Larry Payne.

Survivors include his daughters, Sandy Payne, Charlotte (Paul) Payne, Lisa (Sammy) Rice, Tina (Jeeter) Payne, and Dee (Robert) Owens; sister, Joyce Morrison Russell; brothers, Perry and Bozo Payne; grandchildren, Sky Bolton, Stormy (Dane) Robinson, Michael Lowery, and Kolt Owens; great-grandchildren, Maelee Robinson, Addie Gass, Kalloway Lowery, and Banks Lowery; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Monday, May 22, in the Trenton chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Brother Eddie Cantrell officiating.  Interment was in Byrds Chapel Cemetery.

KATHY REED

Kathy Diane Reed, 61, of Bryant, Ala., passed away Sunday, May 14, 2023.

She was born on June 1, 1961, in Jasper, Tenn. Kathy was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend who will be deeply missed by all those who knew her. She was a kind and warm-hearted person who brightened up every room she walked into with her infectious smile and charming personality. Her family was everything to Kathy and she treasured every moment spent with them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Silas Miller and Betty Jenkins; grandson, Logan Castleberry; brother, David Miller; sister, Jessie West.

Survivors include her husband of many years, Jerry Reed; daughter, Sheena Ellis; son, Joshua Reed; sisters, Vivian Dagnan, Betty Dagnan, Tammy Rush, Caroyln Steele, and Viola Shrum; brothers, Steve Miller, Justin Dagnan, and Mike Dagnan; grandchild, Kristen Reed.

DELORES SMYTH

Deloris Rebecca (Buchanan) Smyth, 90, of Trenton, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023.

She was born Aug. 8, 1932, to the late Ephriam and Ida Buchanan, grew up in Trenton and was a 1950 graduate of Dade County High School. In 1964 she and her late husband, Charles, opened Char-Del Shoes and ran it successfully for 35 years. Deloris was a founding member of Citizens Bank and served on the board of directors for over 30 years. She loved to entertain was also very passionate about square dancing and became a member of the Star Twirlers of Chattanooga, Tenn., for many years.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Viola Buchanan, Lester (Elsie) Buchanan, Chester (Ruth) Buchanan, Ruthie (James) Shrader, Jewell (Walter) Heiser, Ida (Jim) Cooper, E.S. (Evelyn) Buchanan, and Wanda (Fran) Hilley.

Survivors include her daughters, Patti (Doug) Bradshaw and Debbie Pratt; sister, Virginia (Max) Joiner; grandchildren, Dusty (Molly) Bradshaw, Bridgett (Mike) VanVeldhuizen, Ashley (Chad) Chambless, and Nikki Lyons; great-grandchildren, Gage King, Trey Bradshaw, Ben Bradshaw, Emma Vandagriff, Delaney VanVeldhuizen, Lorlei VanVeldhuizen, Patrick Segurola, and Jack Segurola; nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Lantern at Morning Pointe on Shallowford Road for their compassionate care of Mrs. Smyth.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 23, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Zack Ditmar officiating. Interment was in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens with Dusty Bradshaw, Trey Bradshaw, Ben Bradshaw, Chad Chambless, and Mike VanVeldhuizen serving as pallbearers.

MABEL WELDEN

Mabel Nash Welden, 96, of Bryant, Ala., passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

Born in Dutton, Ala., she was a resident of Bryant for 80 years where she and her husband, Andrew, owned and operated Welden’s General Mercantile.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Andrew Welden; parents, Burla and Edna Nash; brothers, Manuel, Harmon, James, Billy, and Palmer Nash; sister, Vina Bowen.

Survivors include her sons, David (Doris) Welden and Lynn Welden of Bryant, Ala.; sisters, Hilda Kinsey and Nelda (Raymond) Long; brother, Charles (Peggy) Nash; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Nash and Virginia Nash; grandchildren, Tyson Welden, Jerell Peek, and Jared Welden; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 20, at the Bryant chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Brother Nellon Smith and Brother Dean Sims officiating. Interment was at Mountain View Cemetery in Bryant, AL.

STELLA WELLS

Stella Lou Wells, 78, of Wildwood, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023.

Mrs. Wells was born Jan. 26, 1945, to the late Alton and Della Casey. She was raised in the Davis community of Dade County, was of the Baptist faith, and retired from Family Dollar where she served as manager for 15 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Dillard Wells; son, Robert Edward Wells; brothers, Bobby and Randy Casey.

Survivors include her children, Rita Tripp, Trenton, Scott Edward Wells, Wildwood, and Regina Griffin, Rising Fawn; grandchildren, Melinda (Phillip) Buckner, Billy (Sheena) McCurry, Edward Eugene Hicks, Ryan Griffin, Tyler Griffin, Shari Cronnon, and Cody Cronnon; 24 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Rickey Casey and Dale Casey of Trenton; sister, Glenda James, Wildwood.

Funeral services will be today, May 24, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Ron Gilbert officiating.

SHERRY WILLINGHAM

Sherry Marlene Willingham, 65, of Wildwood, passed away May 20, 2023.

Born on Aug. 5th, 1957, in Rome, to parents Stanley Allan Conaway and Glenda Conaway, Sherry was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. During her career, Sherry worked as a clerk for the Dade County government for many years. Her dedication to her work and willingness to assist others will not be forgotten. Sherry was an independent and loyal person who loved advocating for animals. Photography and gardening, music and traveling were among her hobbies.

She was predeceased by her father, Stanley Allan Conaway; husband, DeWayne Willingham; sister, Lisa Townsend; brother, Jeff Conaway; and niece, Natalie Hope Tomblin.

Survivors include her mother, Glenda Conaway; sister, Lori (Nathan) Tomblin; brothers, Greg (April) Conaway and David (Lisa) Conaway; brother-in-law, Don Townsend; nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Gathering to celebrate her life will be at Moore Funeral Home on Thursday, May 25, from 4–7 p.m. The family invites all friends to join them at this time.

A private family graveside service will be at Lake Hills Memorial Gardens with Brother Jerry Atkins and Brother Tommy Crider officiating.

TAMMY WIXOM

Tammy Renee Wixom, 52, of Henagar, Ala., passed away Sunday, May 14, 2023.

She was the daughter of Gary Paul Dempsey and Marilyn Davis.

Survivors include her mother, Marilyn Davis; children, Nicholas Alan Keller, Ethan Paul Dempsey, Savanna Rose Dempsey, Jessica Denise Wixon and JT (Joseph Thomas) Wixom; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services were Thursday, May 18 at Mt. Olive Cemetery on Lookout Mountain with Bro. Mark Finlayson officiating.
