The New Home Fire Department assisted the Georgia Forestry Commission and the Tennessee Forestry Commission to battle a wildfire on Sand Mountain last week. Chief Dennis Kelley noted that the wildfire was about 200 acres located near Scratch Ankle Road and Stallings Road near the Tennessee state line. Winds stayed calm and the wildfire did not jump any fire breaks that were made. No structures were damaged. The fire was contained, and the rains last Thursday helped to extinguish the fire. “If you are traveling through the area, take the time to slow down. A lot of our wildlife has been displaced. We are seeing a lot of deer activity,” Kelley said.
