HAZEL GOOCH

Hazel Irene Gooch, 86, of Trenton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025.

Born Aug. 29, 1938, in Manassas, Va., Hazel was the daughter of the late Thomas and Irene Ennis. She spent a significant portion of her adult life in Bladensburg, Md., before moving to Trenton 24 years ago. Hazel dedicated many years to her career as the Food Service Manager for the Prince George County School System. She attended Woodlawn Baptist Church in Maryland and cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Preston “Buster” Oliver Gooch Sr., Hazel was preceded in death by her children, Wanda Gillis and Preston Oliver Gooch Jr.

Survivors include her children, Diane (Bruce) Tomlinson and Cathy (Peter) Basso; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Karen, Theresa, Michelle, and Bruce Jr.; 11great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be conducted at Cheltenham Veteran Cemetery in Cheltenham, Md.

EFFIE MARION

Effie Leomie “Nana” Ellison Marion, 92, of Bryant, Ala., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025.

Born April 15, 1932, in the 15th District of Cocke County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Clark and Maggie Ellison. Effie married Virgil Marion in 1950, lived in Knox County as well as Chattanooga, Tenn., and eventually settled in the Bryant, Ala., community in the early 1970s. She raised five sons, was an avid gardener and exceptional cook, and even built a career as a nurse. Effie was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Bryant, Ala. Later in life, Effie became an EMT for Bryant Rescue Squad, assisted in developing various community resources including, health clinics, Ruritan Club, Senior Center and then trained to be a nurse working in area hospitals and clinics. She also volunteered with various organizations across the country.

In addition to her parents, Effie was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; son, Dana Marion; brothers, Ted, Royal, Charles, and Leon Ellison; sisters, Irene Williams, Shirley Willis, and Edith Greenwald.

Survivors include her sons, Warren (Sherry), Ernie, Eddie, and Kennedy Marion; sisters, Imogene Turner, Betty Willis, Francis Walker and Hope McCain; granddaughters, Katie (Grady) Brown, Rebecca Marion, and Nova Marion; grandsons, Adam Marion and Andrew Edwards; great-granddaughters, Rileigh, Teagan, Aila, Iris, Kali, Annie and Hattie, great-great-grandchildren, Norah and Tat;, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 31, in the Bryant chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Brother Steve Townson officiating.

GLORIA SHADOWENS

Gloria Shadowens, 92, of Trenton, passed away Tuesday, Dec.31, 2024.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a Christian for 60-plus years and was a passionate soul winner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe L.G. Shadowens; eight siblings.

Survivors include her children; Deborah (Herschel) Carlson, Dawn (Andy) Stowe, and Joe (Chelsea) Shadowens; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Renshaw officiating. Interment was at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
