All-Inclusive Resorts Vs. Cruises

Dawn Mulford – Contributing Columnist

Many of my traveling clients have asked, “What are the big differences between an all-inclusive land resort and a cruise? I want the best price with the most amenities possible.” My response is that an all-inclusive resort will offer more relaxation, larger rooms, and local cultural immersion, while cruises provide the convenience of visiting multiple ports of call with diverse entertainment, like Broadway shows and casinos.

Cruises generally have lower base costs but often include extra charges for drinks, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining, whereas all-inclusive resorts bundle these into a single price, making them possibly better for fixed budgets.

The best choice depends on your individual priorities: Cruises are ideal for active travelers who want to see multiple places and enjoy nonstop onboard entertainment, while resorts suit those seeking a more relaxed, spacious environment focused on a single destination and local exploration.

All-Inclusive Land Vacation Pros

  • More space: Rooms are typically much larger than cruise ship staterooms. Resorts offer beach access, multiple pools, bars, and restaurants.
  • Relaxed atmosphere: Focus is on lounging by the pool or beach.
  • True all-inclusive experience: Drinks, Wi-Fi, and most amenities are included in one price, making it easier to budget.
  • Entertainment: Many resorts have nightly entertainment and may include free use of non-motorized water sports equipment (like kayaks, boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, and paddle boards)
  • Local culture: Offers more time to explore the local culture and environment.

All-Inclusive Land Vacation Cons

  • Single destination: You are limited to one location.
  • Weather dependency: You are stuck at the resort if the weather is bad. Great weather is never guaranteed, but you can ask your travel advisor for information on the best seasons to travel to your destination.
  • Potentially lower quality: Entertainment and food can sometimes be lower quality compared to luxury cruises. It is important to check out the resort and recent reviews to avoid any kind of disappointment.

Cruise Pros

  • Multiple destinations: Visit several places without the need for multiple bookings. You unpack once and still see multiple destinations.
  • Lots of entertainment: Cruises offer a variety of onboard activities, shows, casinos, and nightlife. Larger ships offer water slides, rock climbing walls, sport courts, and even ice skating rinks. Some of these are truly amazing floating resorts.
  • Mobility-friendly: Self-contained and easy to navigate, making it ideal for those with mobility issues. Accessible rooms for wheelchairs and mobility devices are available on most cruise ships along with accessible shore excursions.
  • Service: Known for consistently excellent and friendly service.

Cruise Cons

  • Smaller spaces: Staterooms are generally smaller than resort rooms.
  • Additional costs: Drinks, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining often come with extra fees which can significantly increase the total cost, although many lines such as Celebrity, Norwegian, Holland America, and Princess offer special “bundled pricing” for these extra amenities.
  • Limited port time: You only have a few hours in each port to experience the local culture.
  • Seasickness potential: Can be an issue for those prone to motion sickness. There are options available over the counter or from your doctor to lessen the effects.

Cruises travel worldwide, whereas all-inclusive resorts tend to be within Mexico and the Caribbean although there are some in Europe (like Spain). Both vacation options (with advance planning) offer the ability to book and place a deposit to hold your vacation. Final payment dates vary by the vendor but typically fall somewhere between 45 to 90 days prior to travel dates. Cancellation insurance is always recommended in case of an unforeseen illness.

I enjoy helping others find their “Dream Vacations” and can assist you with planning and booking. There is no fee to use a travel agent if you are booking an all-inclusive resort or a cruise since I am paid a small commission by the vendor.
