Several Veterans Day traditions continue this year throughout the county, including the Veterans Day Parade. However, for the first time ever, the parade is being held in the evening and during the week.
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, the parade will begin at Moore Funeral Home and end at Bank of Dade. If you have a last minute addition to the parade, call Gary Moore (Legion Commander) at 404-376-9596.
After the parade at 7 p.m., Trenton Methodist Church is holding its annual God and Country Service, featuring folding of the flag, an empty chair service, special music, and presentation of a quilt of valor. Sam Guthrie, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, will be speaking.
The American Legion Post military museum will be reopening on Veterans Day after investing time, money, and effort into renovations of the building. Moore reported that work will continue on a few minor details, but the legion is thrilled to invite guests into the museum starting at 10 a.m. on November 11th. He said, “We will have people there to explain the displays. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.”
Dade County Schools also mark Veterans Day and take the opportunity to teach the younger generations about those who have fought for our freedom by holding events on November 10th.
Dade County High School’s Veterans Day assembly is at 9 a.m. while Dade Middle School’s assembly is at 2 p.m. Both assemblies will feature music and guest speaker Tony Moreland.
At Davis Elementary, veterans from students’ families are invited to lunch on the 10th. Third through fifth graders also listen to a guest speaker.
Students at Dade Elementary make posters for veterans and invite local veterans to the school at 8:30 a.m. for coffee, breakfast, and a short performance. Students will sing and one student will read a poem during the performance. Tinena Bice (school counselor), reported that the school discusses each month’s character word with the students and explains that veterans exemplified these words through their sacrifice and service to our nation.
