Qualify To Run For City Commission Next Month

The City of Trenton’s Nov. 4 election will have two commission seats on the ballot: police commissioner and parks and recreation commissioner. Qualifying will be at city hall for three days next month: Aug. 19-21, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. The qualifying fee is $216.

The current police commissioner is Mike Norris, and the current parks and animal control commissioner is Terry Powell. (In the near future, animal control will become law enforcement’s responsibility, so the parks and animal control seat will become “parks and recreation commissioner.”)

In 2024, each commissioner’s stipend was $600 per month ($7,200 per year). This small salary reflects the part-time nature of the job. Candidates, be prepared that the role is a job. City voters, remember that your tax dollars pay the commissioners’ salaries, and you get to choose who you think will best earn it.

The last city election (Nov. 7, 2023), only saw a ten percent voter turnout—of the 2,478 registered city voters, only 248 cast a ballot.

Also, the Secretary of State’s office has published the list of inactive voters who have just been purged from voter rolls. Be sure to check your voter registration on the My Voter Page (mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/), especially if you haven’t voted in a recent election. Oct. 6 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election.
