Citizens Academy Returns This February

After a several year hiatus, Citizens Academy is returning in February. The Dade County Sheriff’s Office provides the ten-week course free of charge to citizens who want to learn about every area of the office’s operations.

The classes are each Tuesday night from Feb. 21 to May 2 with an extra week of additional activities offered to those who complete all ten weeks.

Sheriff Ray Cross is pleased that the event is returning. He said, “Citizens can come and learn about every aspect of law enforcement that we do here. We take them through road patrol, K-9, investigations, the jail, and my office. We do a mock trial. We bring our drug task force in and teach them about opioids.”

He continued, “If they attend every class, they can do the bonus week where they ride with an officer, go to the firing range, and things like that.”

To sign up for Citizens Academy, contact the Dade County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 657-3233 and ask for Cyndi Thurman or Ashley Brown.
